While driver recruitment is extremely important, and very popular today, driver retention is still equally as important! With so many hiring managers concerned with filling open positions, many companies have neglected one important aspect of their hiring process, which is causing open positions on a recurring basis.
One of the best things you can do during this difficult hiring time, is look at these driver retention tips and make sure you do not fall into the trap of an endless cycle of hiring because you cannot keep your drivers.
- While pay and salary are important to truck drivers, one of the most common reasons they leave a position is because the company they work for is not engaging. It is important to get to know your drivers, ask them how things are going, what suggestions they have. Engage with them often. This will make them feel like they are part of the team!
- It is important that everything during the hiring process be honest and that you are upfront with candidates about the “true” job. It will not boost well if you sugar coat the position, or stretch the truth. You may get the hire, but within a short time will be back at it again. Not to mention the amount of negative remarks you will get from a disgruntled former driver will hurt your chances of hiring.
- While using social media to attract candidates is a great idea, it is important that you use it for more than that. Make sure that you show a sense of community on your social media platforms, interact with your drivers, and provide helpful information for your staff. This will show that you are invested in your drivers and care about community.
Attracting truck driving candidates is great, but if you do not keep these driver retention tips in mind, you will constantly be recruiting!
